Research: Generation of molecular tools for more efficient breeding of the African eggplant

research1

Mr. Fred Masika, one of the staff under the Department of Agricultural and Biological Sciences at Uganda Christian University carried out a study at the BecA-ILRI hub to contribute towards generation of molecular tools for more efficient breeding of the African eggplant (S. aethiopicum). He developed a linkage map using genotyping by sequencing.

He also developed a segregating population, isolated and quantified genomic DNA, and prepared libraries for sequencing.  This is aims at generating a high density linkage map vital in mapping important published agronomic traits in this plant.

He has raised segregating populations from inter and intra-specific crosses to develop recombinant inbred lines for transfer of important traits and for phenotypic characterization
