Mr. Godfrey Sseremba, a PhD student of Plant Breeding at West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), University of Ghana is carrying out research that is focused on breeding of Solanum aethiopicum Shum group for water use efficiency and drought tolerance (DT).

The study involves identification of parental material for water use efficiency (WUE) and general drought tolerance (DT) traits through drought screening and combining ability studies of selected germplasm for the WUE/DT trait(s).

From the combining ability study, parents with good general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) will be used for improvement of farmer preferred varieties for WUE/DT and recommended for further testing/release as hybrids, respectively.

His work is also aimed at mapping the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with high drought tolerance using an F2 mapping population.
